Japanese Film Festival 2009 starting in March 2009-02-26
The Japanese Film Festival 2009 will be starting from the end of February in Cape Town and moving further Northward toward the end of March. The focus this year seems to be on drama, with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. If you plan to attend, you can look forward to these films:

A Stranger of Mine (2004)

Drama
This light-hearted film takes a look at events which transpire during a single night at a restaurant from the viewpoint of five different characters. Its slight comedic approach and charming love story takes an interesting look at the motivations of men and women.

Breathe in, breathe out (2004)
Drama
This feel-good drama follows the events that transpire as a group of young Japanese workers in a sugarcane field in Okinawa must work doubly hard to make up for the shortfall in their yearly harvest. Part of the appeal lies in watching the development of the cast as they forge their characters through hard work and communal living.

Kamikaze Girls (2004)

Comedy
Based on a manga by Novala Takemoto, this comedy focuses on the bond which forms between two unlikely female students and their experiences in Japan’s interesting youth subcultures.

Madadayo (1993)

Drama
This gripping drama was the final film to be created by Japan’s prolific film maker, Akira Kurosawa, and takes us on emotional journey as a retired university professor is cared for by his former students in the difficult post-WWII era. This is based on a true story.
